Studio Tour

Today was spent tidying my workspace at home. I am lucky enough to have an entire spare bedroom dedicated to my art studio. However, since it is the home of all of my creative energy, it can get very messy and cluttered very quickly. Nothing re-energizes me more than getting things organized and in their place.

I have done a lot of growing and learning this past year and MoKoPo has transformed from a "Hmm, I wonder if I can do this" dream to a "This is my passion. This is my career. It is happening" reality.  With that, it was very important for me to create a workspace that allows for serious productivity-- a place where I can lock myself in for the day and create to my heart's content. You might remember my modest little set up from my post at the end of 2010 here. What a transformation, huh?!

I have three main "stations" in my studio. I have a "business and blogging" station that houses my calendar, computer, and office supplies, a "crafty" station that is a clean, open counter space used for assembling things, packaging prints, etc., and a "get messy and create" space where all the magic happens.

I designed and assembled my desk space using mostly products from IKEA (uhh, LOVE ikea!). It was important to me to have lots of counter space, lots of storage space, and that the desk utilized as much space as possible in my small room.

To create the desk, I used one large Expedit bookcase turned on it's side for the left end piece, and two small Expedit bookcases for the middle and right end pieces.

The desktop is actually composed of two separate Vika Amon table tops laid across the three bookcases (they meet in the middle of the center bookcase). To keep them from sliding around, I attached them to the bookcases with a strip of adhesive velcro. Works like a charm!

Note: The bookcases are slightly deeper than the table tops which wasn't a big deal to me. I just slid the table tops all the way toward the front of the bookcases so that they were flush in the front. The small gap at the back (against the wall) allows me to run my computer cord up the wall, behind the desk, and into my laptop to charge.

I do most of my painting at this desk, also purchased at IKEA (called the "Vika Blecket Drawing Desk") The desk is able to be tilted up at the back and used as more of a drafting table, but I usually just keep it flat and work from there. I have a small, portable, plastic slanted surface that I can use if I need a drafting type of space (in this photo it is what the 4 red canvases are sitting on).

I've had this desk for years and I've just accepted the fact that it is my work area and it WILL get messy. I gave up trying to keep it clean (notice all the paint on it?) and it's so much less stressful to create without feeling like I have to restrain myself for the sake of staying tidy.

In this room I have one closet which houses all of my blank canvases, some finished canvases, shipping supplies, and my prints.

Behind the entry door I have a hanging shoe organizer where I store all of my soft materials like t-shirts, tote bags, etc., as well as the small canvas journals I paint occasionally

Behind my desk is a giant pegboard wall. I started using pegboard as part of my art show display (seen here) and I loved its versatility so much that I knew I needed it in my studio as well! This is where I keep the supplies I need most often (paints, brushed, pens, etc.) so they are always within easy reach.

Once again, the small white shelves that hold my paints were purchased at IKEA. They are called the "Ribba" photo ledge. Instead of using screws, I simply hung them up with pegboard hooks through the shelves' pre-drilled holes. Luckily, I already had these shelves-- they can be seen holding my finished canvases in my old studio set-up.

The containers holding my pens, markers, and brushes are called "Asker" containers. Other items are hung up with general pegboard accessories found at any home improvement store. I actually bought a giant assorted pack of hooks at Big Lots for a good deal. The long skinny pegs are great for hanging scissors and store-bought items that have hanging tabs already in the packaging (in this case, colored pencils, doilies, etc.) Two of my larger paintbrushes are hung up using double hooks meant for things like screwdrivers.

Since I'm ALWAYS in need of paper towels to dry my brushes and to clean up unfortunate paint spills, I decided to rig a hanging device so they are always on-hand. I just used a little bit of rope, tied two loops at the ends, and strung it through the roll to hang it on the desk's screws. Easy peasy!

And on a final note, I want to mention that if you go to IKEA to do some shopping for your own studio, be sure to check out the "As-is" section near the checkout of the store. This is the place where they put all sorts of defective, returned items that are often drastically discounted.

I found this returned piece of kitchen cabinetry originally intended to hold and sort plates. Now I use it as a place to organize all of my prints and keep them from getting damaged. Be sure to think outside the box!

So that's it! What do you guys think? Have any favorite parts of my studio? What about your own creative workspace solutions? I'd love to hear about them-- please share in the comments below!

Also, if you have any questions about items in my studio (where I got them, how I set them up, etc.) don't hesitate to ask! I'm an open book!

Easy Holiday Party Decorations

Last night Kyle and I threw a small holiday party for our closest friends. It was a great success, especially considering it is a bit of a long drive for most of our guests to get to our house.

Not only did we have lots of fun socializing, eating, dancing like crazy people with the Kinect, and trading silly presents in the White Elephant gift exchange, but Kyle and I had a lot of fun decorating and preparing before the guests even arrived. When we were finished cleaning, putting up decorations, and cooking the food, the whole house was cozier and more festive and we were instantly injected with a bit of holiday cheer.

Ornament given to us by my mom-- Thanks mom! Love it!

Little party favors I put together for our guests. Peppermint Hot Cocoa in a Jar. "Rudolph" Artwork by MoKoPo

Holiday wall display I created for the event but I think I will put up every year. I love how it turned out! The "presents" are just some blank canvases I had lying around in my studio that I wrapped and hung up. The print is actually a FREE printable I found via pinterest and had printed off at Sam's Club. Frame from Michaels. Print by eighteen25 can be found here: Free Subway Art Printable

Super easy pennant banner I made with some scrapbook paper, a hole punch, and some ribbon

Our family stockings

The completed food table. Doesn't it look so cheery and festive! Two of the recipes I made for the evening were this Christmas Wreath Appetizer (topped only with broccoli and red peppers) and this Christmas Tree Appetizer (filled with cream cheese, green onions, and salami instead). Hanging Advent calendar bought on Etsy (shop no longer exists)

One of the fun white elephant gifts that a guest won: a very classy 6-pack of Natty Light in bottles! They were a hit.

Are you having a holiday party this year? How are you decorating? Where do you get your ideas? Please share in the Comments Section below!

Pegboard Extravaganza!

For those of you who didn't know, we recently moved back into our house in Loveland, allowing us to have more space and more of a place to call our own, as opposed to the cramped apartment we were living in. One of the perks of having a three bedroom house (and no kids)  is that two of the "bedrooms" can be made into whatever we want them to be. One of these rooms is officially my art studio/office!

I recently went on an IKEA binge and bought some great (and inexpensive!) pieces to create a ginormous work table/desk. The more I perused office organization ideas, the more I fell in love with pegboard. It is super cheap and so, so, SO versatile! My plan is to have one big wall over my desk space be all pegboard to hang supplies, finished artwork, and even shelves and storage baskets!

In the meantime, while I get my studio all set up to perfection, I decided to show you all some of the amazing pegboard office areas I've found on the interwebs. No worries, I will post pics of my own studio when it is complete!

Love the Clipboards on this one:

Literally the ENTIRE wall is pegboard! And I love the mint green:

I love everything about this one. The behind the door pegboard, the funky wallpaper, the floating shelves, fact that it's in a freakin' closet:

I like the extra little hidden pegboard box at the top:

Those are some of my faves. Which one is your favorite? I can't decided between painting my pegboard or leaving it a clean white... thoughts?

Studio Away From Studio (and other new happenings!)

Let me first start by saying my boyfriend is amazing.

Now that that's out of the way, let me explain why. We spend a lot of time together which is great! However, he also lives about 25 minutes away from me so I would often joke that I felt like a child of a divorce-- When I was at his house I would realize I left something at my house. And when I was at home, I would realize I had taken something to his house and left it there. Usually these "things" were related to my artwork. I would be at home and inspired to paint, then realize that I had taken my painting to his house to work on. Or, I'd be at his house and get a brilliant idea to add ribbon to my painting and realize I left all my ribbon at home. Frustrating.

So, my boyfriend (Hi Kyle!), being so very supportive like he is, offered to give me a whole room in his house just for me to "go crazy and create" in. A "Studio Away From Studio" in my home away from home! :)

I got it all set up yesterday and I am SO excited to get in there and create!!

I'll have to add more photos once I get things on the walls and such. But hooray for my own little space, and an extra HOORAY for giant windows with natural light!

On a somewhat related note, I have also been commissioned to do a GIANT painting which I'm very excited about. It will be a huge undertaking but I've always loved the idea of working on a larger scale and now's my chance! Okay, so it's not billboard-sized but it still looks pretty funny and awkwardly large on my easel, haha. (I kept Sadie, the dog, in the photo for a size comparison)

Dear IKEA, My dresser just exploded. Love, Megan

One of the strangest things to ever happen to me occurred yesterday and I needed to write about it and share. Some of you may not even believe me but I promise I'm not embellishing a thing...

Yesterday was a very productive day for me and the fam. My mom and aunt came to my apartment to help me get organized and to help tidy up. My dad came over to do some detailed fixes like electrical outlets and shelf hanging. My brother, Tyler, came over and I helped him get started on some of his homework.

While everyone was being busy bees, Tyler and I began reading his book on Greek gods and goddesses aloud. Out of nowhere the pane of glass sitting on top of my dresser spontaneously EXPLODED into a zillion pieces and went flying across my room! Tyler and I were SHOCKED. My mom thought my dad had fallen down the steps. My sister, Briana, heard the "bang!" from the yard next door and came running over. My first thought was that something had come through my bedroom window (it looks out onto the front porch). Perhaps a neighbor kid threw a ball or something. But then I saw that it was the dresser. Then I thought it was probably the frame hanging on the wall above it that had fallen, but nope! It was still there. Nothing was sitting on top of it. Nothing had fallen on it. It was room temperature with nothing extremely hot or cold in sight. It had simply shattered without any apparent reason.

I of course "googled" this to see if it had happened to anyone else and I got a bunch of forum posts and such of people discussing pressure changes and temperature effects, and blah blah blah... I had joked that perhaps it was my Grandma's spirit who was angry that we were working on my aunt Rose's birthday. Or maybe it was my Grandpa's spirit, annoyed that he wasn't included on the family gathering.

Whatever it was- pressure, temperature, spirits, or coincidence- it was a bizarre event that nonetheless made us all stop our busy lives for a moment and remember the ones we loved and lost.

A Kitchen That's More "Me"

Well my new kitchen is finally done and I LOVE it! My mom has an amazing superpower: the ability to energize and motivate anyone just by being in the room. So, she came over and grabbed a brush and the two of us worked until super late last night finishing up the painting. My dad/landlord already made it known that he does not like the bright color but I promised him that if I decide to move out in the future, I'd change everything back before I left.

This morning I went to IKEA and splurged on a new kitchen island. I had a table and four chairs in the middle of my kitchen before but it really just got in my way. I cook a lot and rarely ever eat in the kitchen so I figured it would be a good investment. I love it already! There are two shelves underneath where I keep my pots and pans and on the other side there are two bar stools for guests. My aunt has already joked that I can be like Benihana or Japanese Steakhouse and cook and flip food at the counter while they watch me, haha.

I made my favorite salad to celebrate my new cooking space....
Ingredients:
  1. Spinach
  2. Boneless, skinless chicken breast tenderloins
  3. Roma tomatoes
  4. Fresh, soft mozzarella cheese
  5. Avocado
  6. Grilled onions
  7. Garlic
  8. Salt & Pepper
  9. Light Balsamic Vinaigrette
I saute the garlic and onions in olive oil while I cook the chicken tenders on my George Foreman grill (greatest invention EVER!). While those are cooking I chop up my avocado, roma tomatoes, and mozzarella cheese. When everything's done, I throw it all in a bowl and toss with a small amount of balsamic vinaigrette (you only need a little- it goes a long way!) I finish it with a dash of salt and pepper. It's my absolute FAVORITE salad ever!

*Tip: If you don't use the entire avocado (I only use half), as long as you leave the core in the other half and cover it with cling wrap, it keeps pretty well.

Beige Shmeige!

I often joke about the fact that I am a Color Addict (admitting you have a problem is the first step...) As you may have seen in an earlier post, my new apartment is a colorful expression of me. I started out by painting my bedroom a light grayish-purple, my bathroom a bright turquoise, and my living room...well, the color of Mountain Dew. After all that painting I was exhausted and decided the kitchen was fine how it was. A light, almost white, beige color. I lived like that for a couple of months but the plain, bland, BEIGE walls were slowly eating away at my soul (okay, a little dramatic, but still...) So yesterday I decided enough was enough and I headed to Home Depot to spice things up!

I first got samples of 3 colors: A bright school bus yellow, a bright purple-violet color, and a bright orangeish-pinkish-melony color. "Subtle" was not an option. As the guy at Home Depot showed me each of the colors in their jars a man next to me said, "Wow. Those are intense." I responded,"Yea. I'm not afraid of color, that's for sure," and he walked away with his light tan paint.

So I got home and put three patches in different spots around the room. "How would it look by the woodwork?", "How would it look by the cabinets?" "How would it look next to the living room wall"....I decided to go with the melony color (It's actual name is "Juicy Passionfruit". Yummy!)

So, since I get very impatient when I'm excited about a project, I got to work and quickly remembered why I had stopped my room-painting spree before. Painting is EXHAUSTING! It's funny how I can sit down at a canvas and paint for 8 hours straight, sometimes forgetting to eat, but put be in front of a blank wall and I can only work about 30 minutes max before I need a break, haha. I got a lot done today but I decided to call it quits for the night. I'll do the corners and trim tomorrow! It's super bright and will take some getting used to but I know it will all come together once I get everything organized...

This looks a little more pumpkin than it really is:

**Also! Here's a little tip: If you're mid-painting and you need to stop for the day, but you know that you're going to come back to it soon and don't want to wash out your brushes and rollers and everything, just wrap them up in some plastic cling wrap! It keeps the paint wet (even overnight!) so you can just pick back up where you left off. My mom is a genius.**

Home Shweet Home

Well I'm finally starting to feel at home in my new apartment! I painted my bedroom first, a subtle purpley-grayish color. Then I noticed that a bamboo plant I had in there looked really pretty with the bright green/purple contrast. So I decided to paint my living room a bright "planty" green color. Let me tell you, trying to find a light green, that's bright, but not neon is VERY difficult. So as I started to paint the living room I got really nervous about how crazy bright it was. But! I just kept telling myself, "I'm young and artsy...maybe I can pull this off." Adding dark brown curtains, brown shelves over the fireplace, white trim/bookshelves, and bright pops of color pulled it all together. It's been tons of fun adding my own personal taste and touch to my place with artwork that I do, as well as work from other artists I admire. My most favorite recent additions have been the miniature spray roses in my bedroom and on my coffee table. They add a little bit of "pretty" to the place :)

My bedroom is relaxing, cozy, a little romantic, and girly. My living room is bright, cheery, colorful and fun. My kitchen and bathroom are works in progress.

My place is completely "Me".

Stu- Stu- Studio!

My own little studio space is officially in the works! For the last couple months I have been slowly taking over my aunt's apartment space with tons of canvas, paintings, paint, drop cloth, pencils, paper, blah blah blah.... She's super sweet and very supportive but I know that when she comes home from work with a shocked look on her face and she struggles to get out, "Ohhh.... another painting?" she's really thinking "oh my god, my place is a disaster!" So, as we've been trying to get all of our storage stuff organized for our yearly yard sale, I realized that a small room down in our basement that is usually filled with TONS of stored crap would be the perfect size for a workspace! So today, while at IKEA with my mom and aunt I stocked up on things I will need to set up the MoKoPo Creations headquarters. I got a sweet drawing desk that, although was a PAIN to put together (my mom can vouch), turned out pretty nice. I've still got a lot to get set up- organizers, painting center, business center with filing etc.- but it's so motivating!! I've added some pictures so you can get a little idea of my progress so far. Keep in mind I'm not quite done, and for GOODNESS SAKE I need some color on the walls!!
